Albino Sterlet – Acipenser Ruthenus

Description: Albino Sterlet are one of the most popular Sturgeon species and is compatible with smaller ponds as it reaches a smaller overall size. They vary in colour from the bright ‘White’ of the Platinum variation, to an almost banana yellow. They have pink eyes (which signifies albinism), or have a dark eye (Leucism – lack in pigment) but maintain the same colour as the Albino Sterlet. Both are sold under the ‘Albino’ tag. Sterlets are often sold as Dwarf Sturgeon, which is inaccurate. They may be a smaller species of sturgeon, but they can still reach over 1 metre!

They are very peaceful fish and will generally spend most of their time in the lower reaches of the pond going about their business.

Maximum Size: Upto 36″ but on average 25-30″ when mature for Albino variants.

Environment: Sturgeon have a preference for cooler water. It is important to feed them a good quality sturgeon food (we sell this!) and do so throughout the year. They a require a large pond due to their adult size and can achieve this within a few years. We recommend a minimum of 4500 litres (1000 gallons) for Sterlets. Good filtration (suitable for Koi) and aeration is a must.

Water Conditions: Albino Sterlet require a pH range of 7-8.5, Ammonia and Nitrite to be virtually 0ppm. Dissolved oxygen saturation to remain above 8ppm. An air pump is a must if considering adding any of the Sturgeon species to your pond.

As with any pet, please fully research for yourself to ensure that you can accommodate a fish of this type in your home.
