Calico Oranda
Description: An oranda is a variety of fancy goldfish characterized by a prominent bubble-like “hood” on the head. The head growth or hood (also known as wen or crown) may be a prominent growth on the top of the head and may encase the entire face except the mouth. The oranda is a metallic or matte scaled goldfish that is similar in appearance to the veiltail. It has a large, long and deep body accompanied by a long quadruple tail. This four-lobed and contracted tail normally spreads out broadly when the oranda stops swimming. The back does not rise up to form a ryukin like hump
Maximum Size: Oranda can obtain sizes in excess of 10″ although this is rare. Fully grown adults are usually 6-8″ fully grown.
Environment: The Oranda needs a large well filtered aquarium. They like a clean living space and high quality food. They can occasionally require some trimming of the ‘wen’ to reduce buoyancy issues. They do not mix well with common goldfish types and are suitable for indoors only, preferring a warmer, room temperature water (not heated).
We cannot ever recommend ‘Goldfish Bowls’ as a suitable living space for any fish.
Water Conditions: Oranda require a pH range of 7-8.5, Ammonia and Nitrite to be virtually 0ppm and dissolved oxygen saturation to remain above 4ppm. They are tolerable to lower oxygen saturation values than a lot of fish, although this is not recommended.
As with any pet, please fully research for yourself to ensure that you can accommodate a fish of this type in your home.
