Tiger Trout for large ponds and aquaponics systems. Warning: Aggressive fish

Tiger Trout – Salmo trutta × Salvelinus fontinalis

Description: Predator fish keepers will love these! They are a sterile hybrid between Brown Trout and Brook Trout (Salmo trutta × Salvelinus fontinalis). Occurring naturally (although rare) in the wild in the US, they are extremely predatory but truly stunning to look at. They are not suitable for homing with smaller fish. Care and consideration is needed if you are looking to purchase one or more of these fish. They are useful as a predatory species where smaller species are breeding prolifically and population control is necessary whilst controlling numbers of predators.

Maximum Size: Upto 30″ but on average 14-16″ when grown.

Environment: Tiger Trout are very quick growing and require a large pond (10000 litres/2200 Gallons+ ideally). All trout require good filtration (as would be for a large koi pond) and air pumps supplying plenty of oxygen. They will require some shade in the summer months. Tiger Trout are popular for use in aquaponics systems due to their fast growth and food consumption.

Water Conditions: Tiger Trout require a pH range of 7-8.5, Ammonia and Nitrite to be virtually 0ppm and dissolved oxygen saturation to remain above 8ppm. They are intolerable to lower oxygen saturation values and susceptible to high water temperatures above 22°C.
