Stellatus Sturgeon – Acipenser Stellatus

Description: Stellatus Sturgeon, Stellate or Starry Sturgeon are a slimmer bodied Sturgeon that retain their vibrant markings as the grow. They feature small white ‘stars’ (hence the name) along their flanks which become more visable as they grow. They retain their strong colours into maturity (unlike Diamond Sturgeon that may get darker and lose the white). They are keen swimmers and spend hours circling the pond looking for food and their long noses can often be seen ‘waving’ at you from a far!

The Stellatus Sturgeon is one of the rarer varieties to find now in aquatic centres. Particularly at a reasonable size.

They are very peaceful fish and will generally spend most of their time in the lower reaches of the pond going about their business.

Maximum Size: Upto 48″ but on average 30-36″.

Environment: Sturgeon have a preference for cooler water. It is important to feed them a good quality sturgeon food (we sell this!) and do so throughout the year. They a require a large pond due to their adult size and can achieve this within a few years. We recommend a minimum of 9000 litres (2000 gallons) for Stellatus Sturgeon. Good filtration (suitable for Koi) and aeration is a must.

Water Conditions: Stellatus require a pH range of 7-8.5, Ammonia and Nitrite to be virtually 0ppm and dissolved oxygen saturation to remain above 8ppm. An air pump is a must if considering adding any of the Sturgeon species to your pond.

As with any pet, please fully research for yourself to ensure that you can accommodate a fish of this type in your home.
