Ramshorn Snails – Planorbis Corneus
Ramshorn Snails are a nice addition to a wildlife type pond or aquarium. The term ‘ramshorn’ is used to describe various kinds of freshwater snails whose shells are planispiral (a flat spiral). They can reach sizes in excess of 1″. They prefer slow moving or still water. Being a hermaphroditic species they can reproduce in the male and female role.
They would be eaten by larger fish such as Koi and tench. They are compatible with smaller species in a well planted pond. Ideally a wildlife pond, with few fish, is their preferred habitat where they will thrive providing a valuable clean up service!
All snails will eat soft vegetation and algae. They are often referred to as clean up crew as they will eat detritus on the bottom of the pond.
Snails are sensitive to treatments with copper and fish medications that are used to eradicate fish lice, anchor worm and gill maggots. Always refer to manufacturers instructions on treatments in your pond or aquarium.
