Perch – Perca fluviatilis

Description: Perch are one of our prettiest (and maybe boldest!) native fish with it’s bright red fins and stripes. Sometimes referred to as ‘the sergeant’, it is a master of disguise and camouflage making it a superior predator. These will eat small fish up to ¾ their own body length. That said, the Perch is quite happy with larger inhabitants.

Perch require a live food source such as Shrimp, Maggots or worms. They will rarely accept a flake or pellet.

Entertaining and vibrant fish, they can become quite bold and learn very quickly where a food source comes from.

Maximum Size: 14″maximum, more likely 8-10″ in a well sized pond.

Environment: Perch are an adaptable species and can survive in a variety of pond sizes. A large pond is advised and they do require a ‘live’ food source. They are a useful addition to many ponds where Goldfish/Roach/Rudd are overpopulating as they can keep small fish numbers in check. Good water parameters are a must. An air pump is advisable as they are less tolerable to low oxygen levels.

Water Conditions: Perch require a pH range of 7-8.5, Ammonia and Nitrite to be virtually 0ppm and dissolved oxygen saturation to remain above 8ppm.

As with any pet, please fully research for yourself to ensure that you can accommodate a fish of this type in your home.
