Grayling – Thymallus thymallus

Description: The grayling (Thymallus thymallus) is a species of fish that is a member of the salmon family, yet shares its spawning time with our native coarse fish. A relatively short lived species at 10-12 years, it is one of our most impressive! The grayling has a giant vibrant dorsal fin that is very similar to a sail fish. Males and female grayling can also be identified by this dorsal fin when mature. Male Grayling sport a much larger and vibrant dorsal fin.

Maximum Size: Upto 20″ but on average 12-14″ when mature.

Environment: As a pond fish they require high oxygen levels and cooler temperatures so a deeper pond would be needed for these fish with high oxygen. Ideally an area with a good flow as they like to spend their time in moving water. Most koi type ponds are fine and I have kept these myself with Koi. Aggressive feeders and truly stunning native fish!

Water Conditions: Grayling require a pH range of 7-8.5, Ammonia and Nitrite to be virtually 0ppm and dissolved oxygen saturation to remain above 8ppm. A good flow of water is very beneficial to Grayling as they are primarily a river species. They will spend a great deal of time in good flows waiting for food to pass by. They can be sensitive to high water temperatures, so a cool, deep shaded area will benefit them.

As with any pet, please fully research for yourself to ensure that you can accommodate a fish of this type in your home.
