Grass Carp – Ctenopharyngodon idella

Description: The Grass carp are common addition to many ponds as it has a reputation for eating blanket weed. These are the normal dark coloured fish and are often referred to as Green Grass carp.  They will eat all aquatic vegetation, but much prefer Koi pellets and sticks with the exception of Duckweed which they absolutely love! These fish can also grow in excess of 4ft! They are also incredibly good jumpers.

In the native wild they are found in rivers in Europe. They are not known to breed successfully in the UK as they require long deep rivers to successfully reproduce.

Grass Carp have been released as a natural aquatic vegetation control in many countries such as the US and New Zealand, but this requires large numbers to make an impact.

Maximum Size: Upto 48″ but on average 30-36″ when fully grown.

Environment: Given the adult size it is recommended they are introduced to a large pond with a large surface area. Grass Carp will readily eat soft vegetation, but will generally leave more fibrous plants alone (such as Iris and Water lillies).  A peaceful fish and mix with all varieties of other pond fish. They can be a little jumpy if spooked with a net so a netted pond is advised. Good filtration and aeration is required for these as they grow quickly and to a large size.

Water Conditions: They require a pH range of 7-8.5, Ammonia and Nitrite to be virtually 0ppm. Dissolved oxygen saturation to remain above 6ppm. They are tolerable to lower oxygen saturation values than a lot of fish, although this is not recommended.
