Ghost Koi

Description: Classic English Ghost Koi (Cyprinus carpio). They are a ‘cross’ between a Mirror or Common Carp and a Yamabuki Ogon Koi. This produces the ghost like features that give them their name. Many don’t class the them as a true Koi, and it is certainly not bred by purists in Japan. In fact the strain was developed in the UK and was seen in commercial fishing lakes back in the early 90’s.

‘Ghost Koi’ has now almost be come a brand name for a variety of metallic, non standard koi varieties. The original, or classic, as we describe them are the true English bred variants.

Maximum Size: 36″ plus although more likely to reach 22-24″ on average.

Environment: Not suitable for small ponds. A minimum of 1000 gallons (4540 litres) is recommended with a minimum depth of 3ft (90 cm). They are a fairly robust fish but benefit greatly from well filtered ponds with large surface areas. They require a good quality floating or sinking pellet food.

Water Conditions: Ghost Koi require a pH range of 7-8.5, Ammonia and Nitrite to be virtually 0ppm and dissolved oxygen saturation to remain above 6ppm.

As with any pet, please fully research for yourself to ensure that you can accommodate a fish of this type in your home.
