Chub – Squalius cephalus

Description: Chub are a common fish found in rivers, streams, canals and lakes throughout the UK. A first glance, similar to the Grass carp in shape. They have a huge mouth and are a greedy species. Characteristics of the Chub are the big white rubbery lips, which are often a giveaway to their position in wild river. They can be piscivorous so it advised to keep them with larger fish only. They are active year round.

Maximum Size: 20″maximum, more likely 14-16″ in a well sized pond.

Environment: Chub require the same environment as a Koi. A large, well filtered and aerated pond. They are a relatively quick growing fish and as such the largest ponds are suitable.

Water Conditions: Chub require a pH range of 7-8.5, Ammonia and Nitrite to be virtually 0ppm and dissolved oxygen saturation to remain above 8ppm.

As with any pet, please fully research for yourself to ensure that you can accommodate a fish of this type in your home.
