Barbel – Barbus barbus

Description: Barbel are one of the most prized catches for anglers in the UK. They are widespread in our river systems (originally only rivers flowing east but now stocked across the country). They are a bottom feeder and scavenger. Small barbel have a mottled skin colour to aid with camouflage which dissapears when the mature. They have a large, almost sail like, dorsal fin.

Maximum Size: Upto 30″ but on average 20-25″ when mature.

Environment: Barbel require large ponds similar to that suitable for Koi. A good water flow inlet is beneficial to them as they like to swim in a current. They are an oxygen sensitive species and an air pump is a must. They are primarily a bottom feeder so sinking pellets (sturgeon pellets are sufficient) are preferred, although in the summer months they will surface feed which is bizarre in itself!

Water Conditions: Gold Tench require a pH range of 7-8.5, Ammonia and Nitrite to be virtually 0ppm and dissolved oxygen saturation to remain above 8ppm. A good flow of water is very beneficial to Barbel as they are primarily a river species. They will spend a great deal of time in good flows waiting for food to pass by.

As with any pet, please fully research for yourself to ensure that you can accommodate a fish of this type in your home.
