Green Tench (Tinca Tinca) is one of the most popular coarse fish species in the UK. Green Tench are an attractive fish with deep green to almost black colouring dependant on the water conditions. They can achieve good sizes in excess of 14″ in a garden pond and will surface feed during the summer months with other species. Green Tench are the only native coarse fish that can be sexed visually when mature by the shape of their fins.
Green Tench prefer a sinking food, but will accept floating pellets in the warmest months. They are very slow growing though and can find it difficult to compete with the carp species slowing their growth rates even further.
